BeatLab

From scrolling to creating.

We live in a world of endless scrolling. Whether it’s a child lost in a game or an adult caught in a social media loop, it’s easy to become a passive consumer of other people’s ideas. At Intervals, we believe technology shouldn't be a distraction.  It should be a powerful creative instrument.

BeatLab is our "creative laboratory" where the computer becomes a tool for invention. We help our students move from music consumer to music creator in a supportive, student-first environment that celebrates each person’s unique voice. Whether you are a total beginner or a seasoned instrumentalist, BeatLab is a welcoming space to experiment, build confidence, and discover how music truly "clicks".

Find Your Lab
BeatLab follows a four-level pathway for all students, with each level building intentionally on the previous one.  Classes are grouped by age to create a learning environment that feels comfortable, engaging, and age-appropriate.

Juniors: Ages 10–12
Teens: Ages 13–17
Adults: Ages 18+

Each group moves through the levels of our BeatLab curriculum, with teaching shaped to reflect the maturity and dynamics of the students in the room.

Throughout the year, BeatLab students work both independently and collaboratively toward meaningful creative goals.  They’ll have opportunities to share their work and celebrate what they have created. Our team believes that students thrive when they feel inspired, supported, and free to experiment.

BeatLab is designed to help students discover the magic they’re capable of, and swings the door wide open to new possibilities!

What Students Learn at Each Level

BeatLab is built as a four-level creative pathway. As students move from one level to the next, they build technical skills, musical understanding, and creative confidence through hands-on projects in Ableton Live. Each level ends with a completed creative project, giving students something real to celebrate and build on.

This is the foundation.  Students learn the basics of Ableton Live, explore MIDI and virtual instruments, and build a strong foundation in rhythm and recording. By the end of the level, students complete their first original beat.

In BeatLab 2, students begin shaping bigger musical ideas into complete songs. They explore song structure, work with loops and samples, and learn how editing and effects can help bring their ideas to life. By the end of the level, students complete a full original song.

This level helps students expand their skills into new creative contexts. They build confidence in mixing, explore synth basics, and learn how music can support visual storytelling through short film composition and performance-based work.

In the final level, students bring together everything they have learned through a more independent creative process. They focus on project planning, artistic direction, advanced mixing, and recording vocals or instruments, ending with a final presentation and self-assessment.

BeatLab FAQs

BeatLab is for students ages 10 and up who are interested in music, creativity, and technology.

No. BeatLab is open to both beginners and students with prior musical experience. Instrumentalists are also welcome and often use the program to expand their musical skills in a new direction.

BeatLab is a great fit for students interested in beat making, songwriting, electronic music, film and video soundtracks, live digital performance, audio production, and creating music for digital platforms.

BeatLab follows a clear four-level pathway. Each level builds intentionally on the previous one, helping students grow in skill, creativity, and confidence over time.

Usually, no. Because BeatLab skills are layered, levels are designed to be taken in order. In rare cases, a student may be approved to skip a level through a portfolio review, teacher recommendation, or a short assessment conversation.

New students can join BeatLab during our Fall, Winter, or Spring enrolment periods. Once enrolled, students can continue seamlessly into the next module in the program pathway.

Each BeatLab class is 60 minutes long and takes place once per week. Each level is approximately 8 weeks in length, including showcase weeks.

Yes. Students can expect weekly assignments that help reinforce learning, encourage independent practice, and support steady progress between classes.

Students are expected to bring their own Mac or Windows laptop to each lesson. This is essential for participating fully in class and continuing their work outside the studio. The studio provides Ableton Live Intro and in-studio equipment for sessions.

The ideal class size is 4–6 students, with a minimum enrollment of 2–3 students for a class to run. Small groups allow for individual feedback, technical support, creative mentorship, and meaningful collaboration.

Because BeatLab is a production-based program, consistency matters. Students may miss up to two lessons per module. If more than two lessons are missed, a one-hour private catch-up lesson is required at the standard private lesson rate so the student can stay on track with confidence.
